The Townshend Act made the colonist mad and they protested immediately.

James Ottis and many other colonists argued that the Writs of Assitance were against natural rights. The Writs of Assistance were documents which were a general search warrant allowing custom officals to search any ship or building if it seems suspicious.
I think this is against our Natural Rights!

Colonial leaders asked for peaceful protests. Articles in The Boston Gazette ask for people to say calm. Police officers feared loss of control so they called for more British troops and officers. Samuel Adams replied with this
"We will destroy every soldier that dares put his foot on shore... I look upon them as foreign enemies"
