In 1830 Captain John Stewart made an agreement with Ngati Toa leader Te Rauparaha to ferry a taua (war party) which would help Te Rauparaha get revenge on their enemies from Ngai Tahu that had been killing and eating his people. In exchange, Stewart would be provided with flax.

Stewart lured the chief of Ngai Tahu, Te Maiharanui in and managed to capture his daughter, wife and him. Several hundred members of his tribe were killed and dozens were enslaved. The chief's family were all tortured and killed
