The exposition of Sundiata Keita is that his father was approached by a divine hunter that said to him that if he married a hideous woman, he would be fathered the mightiest of kings.
King Konate ignored the request, but many years later he was presented, Sogolon Conde, "Buffalo Woman". They later got married and had a son Sundiata Keita who was partially immobilized from the waist down.
Sundiata's father had died and his father's first born son, Sundiata's older half brother, took the throne. The new king forced Sundiata and his mother to leave the country.
Sundiata finds himself in the kingdom of Mema. The king of Mema idolizes Sundiata for his courage and tenacity despite his physical and emotional struggles in early life. Because the king is so impressed by him, he makes Sundiata a very powerful leader of the kingdom and provides him with an army.
His original kingdom, Niani, was under attack and heard of his success so they asked him to help them. At The Battle of Kirina, Sundiata and his army defeated the Sosso king and became the first Emperor of the Mali Empire. He was the first of the Mandinka line of kings to adopt the royal title Mansav.
Sundiata's original kingdom loved him and he became a very successful king and leader.
