The story of Pandora's box begins with Prometheus and Zeus. Prometheus, who created man, knew they needed some protection. He asked Zeus if man could have fire, Zeus refused, fire was only for the gods. Prometheus was angry, he would not see his precious creation fail. So he stole fire from Mount Olympus and gave it to man. Zeus was furious when he found out.
Prometheus was punished for this. He was chained to a rock where every day an eagle would come and peck out his liver. Prometheus' liver would then regrow every night only to be pecked out the next morning. Even during his torture Prometheus never regretted what he did.
As if torturing Prometheus wasn't enough Zeus decided that the humans should be punished as well for accepting the fire. To punish man, Zeus ordered that the first woman be created, her name was Pandora. She was created to look like the goddess Aphrodite. She received the gifts of wisdom, beauty, kindness, peace, generosity, and health from the gods. From Zeus, she received two gifts, the gift of curiosity and a box she was told never to open.
Pandora loved life on Earth, her curiosity gave her a love for learning. On Earth, she fell in love with the titan Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus. Epimetheus went to Prometheus to ask for his blessing to marry Pandora, he refused to give it to him, saying never to accept gifts from the gods. Epimetheus married Pandora anyway. Whilst Pandora was happy with her life, she often wondered what was inside the box that Zeus had gifted her.
Curious Pandora could no longer bear not knowing what was hidden inside of the box. She thought that because It was from the gods it must contain some great treasure. She opened the lid of the box and out flew greed, envy, hatred, pain, disease, hunger, poverty, war, and death. Pandora slammed the box shut, but it was too late all the evil forces of the world had already escaped.
As Pandora wept she heard a tinkling noise coming from within the box. Thinking that nothing worse could happen, she opened the lid of the box once more. Hope flew out of the box. Pandora felt her pain ease as Hope floated up into the sky. She knew that opening the box had been a mistake but she had know sent Hope forth to counter all of the evil that she had released.
