Storyboard Text

  • Across the bay from the land of the Cyclopes was a lush, deserted island. Odysseus and his men spend a few days there, feasting on wine and goats. As they spend their time on this island, they learn about whether they are allies or enemies with the Cyclops.
  • ...We saw a cavern yawning above the water, screened with laurel, and many rams and goats about the place inside a sheepfold.
  • The Cyclops becomes furious, snatches two of Odysseus' men at a time, and throws their bodies against the rocks. The Cyclops then eat their bodies. Only the Cyclops is strong enough to move the stone away from the mouth of the cave. This makes it difficult for Odysseus to get revenge.
  • We Cyclopes care not a whistle for your thundering Zeus or all the gods in bliss; we have more force by far.
  • Odysseus tells Polyphemus his name is "Nobody" to prevent Polyphemus from being able to successfully call for help when Odysseus acts out his escape plan. This portrays that Odysseus is clever because he makes up a false name in order to ruse the Cyclops.
  • My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy.
