1829 - Jackson's Speech

Pike explored part of Kansas and said it was worthless. He was also the first American to travel the territory by land.
1830 - Indian Removal Act

Long travelled by steamboat. He also labelled Kansas as 'The Great American Desert'.
Andrew Jackson convinced the government to pass the Indian Removal Act. He called the Native Americans "savages".
East Native Americans were forced to move to reservations. Tensions rose and the tribes did not normally have much contact.
