  • Hrothgar’s queen, Wealhtheow, greets the guests and offers ale to her husband first.
  • Drink up!
  • Wealhtheow then welcomes Beowulf and offers him the wine-vessel.
  • 'I shall… Prove myself with a proud deed Or meet my death here in the mead-hall' (636-638).
  • Before retiring, Hrothgar wishes Beowulf good luck.
  • I have never trusted my hall to anyone except you. I will give you anything you yearn for, that is, if you win and survive.
  • I am as strong as Grendel. He does not use weapons so I shall fight unarmed!
  • Beowulf’s men did not expect to see home again, “But the Lord was weaving a victory on his war-loom for the Weather-Geats” (696-697).
