Eddie meets the Captain, also the man who shot him in his leg to save his life from burning to death. The Captain symbolizes sacrifice, He symbolizes sacrifice because he made a promise that he would get all of his platoon home safely, though the captain himself didn't make it home, his platoon did safely, as he promised. He is Eddie's second person.
Eddie meets Ruby, the woman which Ruby Pier was named after, Ruby had great regret that her husband had made Ruby Pier, because the place was full of accidents and tragedy. Her husband had been injured in a fire at Ruby Pier with a life threatening injury when a piece of the main enterance fell on him. She is also Eddie's third person. Ruby Symbolizes forgiveness.
Eddie then meets Tala, a child who he accidentally killed while burning the houses in a Japanese P.O.W. Camp, she symbolizes like sort of protection. She forgives Eddie for her death, and tells him that he has protected many others from accidents at the pier, and he had a purpose to be at the pier, and that him doing his job at the pier does good for her, she forgives him when she ask him to wash her, like a mother.
