  • Theme: Selfish Beowulf wanted the treasure to be buried with him and a lighthouse built to remember him.
  • This is shown towards the end of the poem. Beowulf ends up getting hurt and starts bleeding out. Examples: Treasure, lighthouse, and wiglaf
  • Foreshadowing: "So he came to the place, carrying the treasure, and found his lord bleeding profusely, his life out an end; again he began to swab his body."
  • Kennings: 1. "The shepherd of our lord". 2. "ring-giver"
  • Assonance: "Now that I bartered my last breath"
  • Alliterations: "Then twelve warriors rode around the tomb, chieftains sons, champions in battle, all of them distraught, chanting in dirges..."
