Storyboard Text

  • I don't want to be a slave anymore. I need to escape!
  • I'm leaving this place!
  • I should stop here!
  • Sojourner Truth decided to run away after her master told her that if she worked hard, he would free her a year before laws legally made her free, but he broke his promise.
  • We're giving you a job!
  • Truth didn't want to leave at night, and everyone would see her during the day. She decided to leave right before the day began. One morning, she left.
  • "Well, Bell, so you've run away from me."
  • "You must go back with me."
  • "No, I did not run away; I walked away by daylight, and all because you had promised me a year of my time."
  • Truth realized that she had nowhere to go. She asked god for help and kept going. She recognized the first house she saw, and she remembered who lived there. She went to stop there.
  • I'll pay for her freedom!
  • The people who lived at the house, Mr. and Mrs. Van Wagener, were not home yet. When they came home, they listened to Truth's story, and gave her a job.
  • Not long after Truth came, her old master found her. Truth refused to go back. If Truth didn't go back, her master wanted to take her child back. Truth refused to let him.
  • "No, I won't go back with you."
  • Mr. Van Wagener paid for Truth's and her child's freedom, and Truth's old master left.
