Patient care is a team effort. As nurses delegate tasks, they allow for more cost effective care and allow efficiency in accomplishing a task. Nurses need to be aware of individual qualifications required for the delegation of that task.
For example, a nurse cannot delegate prescriptive authority because that is not one of his/her typical practices. Advanced practice nurses are able to prescribe due to extra education, but cannot delegate this task.
Pete, would you help Mr. J in getting a shower today?
Delegation allows for a nurse to manage patient load without being overwhelmed and missing important steps. Proper communication in delegation will increase patient safety and patient outcome. As nurses we must be aware of the five rights of delegation and use them in our everyday practice.
