All slaves are free!
Battle of Gettysburg
We're fighting for freedom!
We're fighting for free labor!
The Fugitive Slave of 1850 was the main cause of the civil war because it required all runaway slaves to be returned to their owners. This was a problem because it forced the northerners (who opposed slavery) to become involved in the capture and return of a runaway slave, against their will. This ultimately left them no choice but to go to war.
Abraham Lincoln is Re-Elected
The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. This proclaimed that all 3.1 million slaves in the south were freed. This created even more tension between the north and south because the south was enraged that the president signed it.
Lee Surrenders to Grant
The battle of Gettysburg occurred on July 1, 1863. It was the bloodiest battle of the war due to the high amount of casualties on both ends. This battle lasted 3 days and became known as the turning point of the war in favor of the union/north. The south would never again have a chance to win the war or threaten the north ever again.
Goals of Reconstruction
On November 4, 1864 Lincoln was re-elected. His victory over Andrew Johnson was a very important and critical moment in the war because if Lincoln wasn't re-elected the outcome could've been very different.
Lee's troops were surrounded at the battle of Appomattox and Grant called Lee to surrender on April 7. On April 9, both commanders met at Appomattox Courthouse. Lee marched his remaining 10,000 soldiers down to the courthouse to agree to the terms of surrender.
Linclon's plan was to go easy on the south by pardoning the confederates if they swore allegiance to the union, and by creating the 10% plan. The radical republicans' plan was to strip the political power of former slave owners, to punish the south, and give African Americans full citizenship and the right to vote. Johnson's plan was to give amnesty to whites who signed loyalty oaths, states must abolish slavery, but there was no role for freed blacks or the ability to vote. Johnson's plan was used.
