Storyboard Text

  • Hey. Thanks a lot. It is really a struggle
  • Hello. Time to start class. Let me just say one thing. I feel really bad for you guys and the things you have to go through.
  • Yea as you can see we dont even get chairs. They really hate us.
  • God this is so dumb. We only did a minor crime and now we are getting punished like we are adults.
  • I know Jacob I totally agree. Hopefully that Dorothea girl can change something
  • Lets go see what work need to be in this prison.
  • Hi, Us lawmakers approve to create public asylums for the mental ill.
  • One day in 1841, Dorothea Dix agreed to teach Sunday school at the jail. That day changed her life for forever. That day she saw some things that really made her think about what need to be done and that they needed to give a some freedom to these people.
  • Thank you, thank very much. This will really help out those people.
  • Dix was horrified to see many prisoners that were bound in chains and and lock in cages. There were children in jail with adults. Most of the children did minor crime but they were all punished with the same time know matter what you did. Dix thought something need to change.
  • I can finally go to bed without having to worry about my mental health.
  • Dix set out to make something change. She visited hundreds of jails and prisons throughout the state of Massachusetts.  She also visited Debtors prisons and jails which is for people who owed money which was dumb because if they got put in there it would be really hard to get out because you can't really get money in jail. Dix and other reformers believed that mentally ill need to be treated and cared for not punished.
  • This was an old debtors prison that is now closed down with the help of Dorothea Dix.
  •  Dix gathered information for about two years. She then prepared a report for the Massachusetts state legislature. Shocked by Dix report lawmakers voted to create public asylums for the mental ill. Dix also visited prisons and jails in other states. Those states joined as well and created special mental hospitals.
  •  People in that time no longer had to worry about what was coming. They could go to bed thinking that everything was going to be with there mental health and not worrying about being locked up for not paying debt to someone or getting punished a ton for doing something very little.
  • Things are better now because people who do something little aren't punished a ton. There is also no more debtors prison which is good because I feel like if you owe someone money your never going to be able to get it in jail. Dorothea really paved the path for all of this and I believe people really followed in her footsteps to make prisons and jails a lot better than they were.
