  • In the early 1600's in the Netherlands, a spectacle maker named Zacharias Janssen makes the first microscope and the first telescope (however, this claim is often disputed as other scientists had similar projects in the past).
  • This led to his discovery of bacteria ("animalcules"), which he apparently discovered by looking at gunk in his teeth.
  • As the microscope became popular, a man named Anton van Leeuwenhoek decided to make his own. Once he did this, he tested it on everything he could around him.
  • At some point when scientist Isaac Newton published a ground-breaking book, Hooke claimed Newton had stolen his work on physics, leading to a rivalry between the two and the desecration of much of Hooke's legacy like his work and even his portrait.
  • Anton had been in communication with a biologist named Robert Hooke, who would later use a microscope and coin the term "cell."
  • Later, a scientist named Matthias Schleiden would begin to think about cell theory, as he would have the revelation that all plants would be made up of cells.
  • At the same time, a scientist named Theodor Schwann would begin to think similarly by having the revelation that all animals must be made out of cells as well. This would lead to the two partnering and beginning the creation of cell theory.
  • However, the two had a large argument about the nature of where cells came from. Schleiden argued against Schwann's theory of cells coming from pre-existing cells (mitosis) and claimed that cells crystalized on their own. However, a scientist named Rudolph Virchow proved him wrong with research stolen from a Jewish scientist named Robert Remak. All of this would build up the cell theory and biology we know today.
