  • Hello Mrs. Jones Thank you for coming in today. How are you?    
  • I'm well. I'm a little concerned about James and his ability to read and do math.
  • Afternoon Schedule science recess Stations: art, free choice, reading,  computer spelling game
  • Why don't we take a seat and I can go over some test results with you.
  • First, I would like to tell you how kind James is. He seeks out students who are playing alone and invites them to join him in a game.  He does seem to be struggling in reading. According to his Istation scores he ranks in the 32% in overall reading. He is strongest at comprehension, but in the 2nd grade 5th month he is reading at a 1st grade in their 1st month level.

  • Thanks. He is a kind person. I'm not sure I really understand all of the numbers, but it sounds like he is really behind his peers in reading. What can I do to help him?

  • One strategy to help him is to both read aloud to him while he follows along and to also have him read aloud to you a minimum of  20 minutes every day. Maybe we could set a goal that he reads 6 days every week. We can do a chart and once he gets 24 days then he can choose a book or toy from the treasure box. Also, He really likes fishing so any books we can find about fishing will help him be more interested.

  •  I think he would really like books about fishing and  working towards a prize. Is there anything else I should do besides read aloud and let him read aloud?

  • Yes. You can use a finger to follow the words as you read so he can more easily follow along. You can also help with comprehension by pausing and using the pictures to help paint a picture of the scene in his mind.

  • Okay. We'll try that. I'll print a calendar for him to keep track of the days he reads and then send it to school for his prize.

  • At school,  I will encourage him to read using his finger. I will also have him practice spelling using a trace, copy, and recall activity. We are developing an after school reading club. I think James would benefit from this extra time to practice.
