In Chapter One, the Nazis begin to take away the rights of the Jews and round them up into ghettos. The Jews later leave the ghettos and are taken away by a "convoy of cattle cars" (Wiesel 22).
In Chapter Two, the Jews travel in the cattle cars to Auschwitz. Along the way, a woman called Mrs. Schachter who "had lost her mind" (Wiesel 24) began to scream of flames in the sky. The rest of the Jews did not believe Mrs. Schachter, until they saw the flames of Birkenau for themselves.
In Chapter Three, Elie and his father are taken to the Auschwitz camp and lose their names, clothing and hair. After spending some time at Auschwitz, the Jews are marched off and arrive "at the new camp: Buna" (Wiesel 46).
