Storyboard Text

  • Food Preservation Methods
  • Irradiating food
  • Dehydration
  • Methods of food preservation can prevent the life processes (MRS GREN) of microbes, most can only slow down/temporarily stop the processes. This allows for food to be stored for some time without the threat of mould/spoilage
  • Chemical preservation with salt
  • Food irradiation acts by damaging the target organism's DNA beyond it's ability to repair. Micro-organisms can no longer grow and reproduce
  • Chemical preservation with vinegar
  • Dehydrating food removes all moisture from it, micro-organisms need a sufficient amount of moisture in order to grow and reproduce, taking the moisture away prevents any growth or reproduction
  • Low temperature preservation
  • Applying salt to food removes moisture, this prevents any from carrying out MRS GREN
  • This is known as pickling. Adding vinegar to food lowers it's PH, this makes the food more acidic, and it will no longer be in the optimum PH range for micro-organisms
  • Lowering the temperature of food slows down the digestive and respiratory enzymes so that MRS GREN is slowed down in micro-organisms
