Storyboard Text

  • From the start, the Catholics who arrived in Australia were poor with little education. In most cases, they were convicts dumped in an unknown land with little chance that they would ever see their families again. It took them 8 months to get to Australia from England. During the trip many people died.
  • The official Church in England was the Anglican Church. Most Catholics transported to Australia were Irish living in England at the time of their conviction.
  • The Catholics had to go without a church for 15 years because the authorities wouldn't them have one.
  • The Catholics felt isolated from God in this strange new land.
  • We want to continue our Religion!
  • You are not allowed to worship in the Catholic way!
  • The first Catholic Mass was held fifteen years after the First Fleet landed in Australia. It was in 1803 and Father James Dixon (a convict) was the priest that lead the mass.
