Storyboard Text

  • An Uncertain Future
  • "The ceremony of twelves frightens me. No, I'm not frightened I am.... eager."
  • Maybe There is Something More?
  • "Ash? Does anything seem strange to you about the apple?"
  • Reciever of Memory
  • "Jonas has been selected to be our next receiver of memory"
  • Jonas is apprehensive and a little excited about the choosing ceremony. The choosing ceremony is an annual event in which all age groups progress to the next age group. Jonas is an eleven progressing to a twelve. Once they reach the twelfth age group they are allocated a role within the community.
  • There Was Life Before This One
  • "Please, take some of the pain!"
  • When Jonas is playing catch with Asher one afternoon he sees a strange change in the apple. He doesn't understand how it changed but he knows that it is different. Jonas doesn't understand what colour is yet as he's never seen it before and so he is frustrated when Asher can't see the change.
  • Everything is not as it seems
  • "He killed it! My father killed it!
  • As the choosing ceremony commences Jonas sits patiently waiting for his name to be called. He panics when his name is skipped but is relieved when the elder calls his name last. He finds out that he has been chosen as the receiver of memory for the community. It is a very important role but Jonas is nervous because he doesn't know what to expect.
  • A Chance at a Better Life
  • "This hill is steep but the snow is powdery and soft. I know that this time there will be no ice, no fall, no pain."
  • Jonas meets the giver who is the previous receiver of memory. The giver passes all of his past memories of the world before his community onto Jonas. some of the memories the giver gives Jonas are happy, like the memory of sledging. Some of the memories however are disturbing. The giver challenges Jonas and gives him memories of war and pain. Jonas is not sure that he likes his allocated job.
  • As Jonas receives more and more memories he realises that the community is not all that it seems. He learns that people lie and the rules set out for people aren't fair. He discovers what release actually is when the giver shows him a clip of his father, a nurturer 'releasing' a twin. Jonas learns that release is actually just euthanasia and is murderous and unjust.
  • Jonas decided that he is going to leave the community so that all the memories that he received off of the giver get released into the community. He thinks that if the people know what life was like before the government control then they will change their ways of living and stand up for what is right. When Jonas leaves he takes a new born child named Gabe with him that his family unit were looking after. He takes him because he fears he will be released for not sleeping through the night.
