Topic Research Script Ben Silvan Hey, how are you doing today? (Ben) I’m good, how about you? (random person) I’m doing good, what are you doing? (Ben) Well, I have an essay to write on missionary and federal controlled school for natives. Do you happen to know anything about that? (random person) Oh, that's so funny I know all about this subject! (Ben) Yay! Where do we start? (random person) Well, A boarding school, is a school where students reside away from home for a certain amount of time. A parent or guardian may send their child to these schools, in hope to mature and help the student. (Ben) Ok… so what does that have to do with natives? (random person) Let me get to the point. Sheesh! (Ben) Fine. (random person) Native Americans throughout history, were looked at as “savages”, and supposedly these school help them to act more “civilized” and live “the normal American lifestyle.” What they do is teach white mens customs, values, and systems. Furthermore, these schools teach natives “christian” beliefs, and convert them. These boarding schools try to take away people's identity and way of life. For the first half of the day they learn English, and the other, industrial training. By 1980, the United States operated 60 of these schools, with 6,200 students occupying the different boarding schools. (Ben) Well this doesn't seem fair. (random person) Your right, Missionary and federally controlled schools are a problem, and is something that needs to be addressed more. The fact that natives get taken away from their family to a school where they are taught how to act “american” is really sad. boarding schools were first seen in 1879. Funding is on decline for the reservation schools, which is why you may not hear about them as much as you did a long time ago. (Ben) Well, how do we change this? (random person) Well, when it comes to changing Missionary and federally controlled schools, I believe that although it may be hard, we can reverse this process. If our government decides to fund these schools more, and put effort into helping natives reach their personal goals there may be hope. We also, need to stop taking away people's identities and let natives have their beliefs. (Ben) Thank you, now I will advocate for this and take this information and write my essay! (random person) You’re Welcome, and thank you for fighting against this injustice. Goodbye, I will see you again. (random person) See ya! (Ben)
