Exposition, Theme, and a Symbol from The Scarlet Ibis
A special baby is born in a caul to a family, but big brother wanted a normal sibling. The family spends time trying to adjust and eventually names the baby. Aunt Nicey tells everyone to respect the newborn since it is a sign from God.
Hey! Show Respect!
I'll call him Doodle since no one expects much from a kid named Doodle.
Big brother leaves Doodle behind and Doodle dies from struggling too much, all because of his brother's greed and pride. Big brother's greed and pride are evident throughout the story but this is where we see it most.
Don't leave me big brother!!!
Just like how the scarlet ibis died from being pushed too hard by the storm, Doodle was pushed too hard by his brother. This is symbolic since both the scarlet ibis and Doodle died after being pushed too hard.
