Storyboard Text

  • Internal Conflict
  • Indirect Characterization
  • "'It's not convenient,' said scrooge, 'and it's not fair'...'A poor excuse for picking a man's pocket..."' (624)
  • "'If quite convenient, sir."' (624)
  • Symbolism
  • "'I wear the chain I forged in life,' replied the Ghost. 'I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on of my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it'"(628)
  • Scrooge's internal conflict is his immense amount of avarice and his inability to look beyond wealth in order to build and maintain relationships.
  • Theme of Transformation
  • "For Scrooge kept the coal box in his own room...The clerk put on on his white comforter, and tried to warm himself at a candle..."(622).
  • Scrooge's responses to other people reveal his personality by showing how he reacts to them. He is indirectly characterized as cruel and uncaring.
  • Symbolism
  • "...and on it's head it wore no other covering than a holy wreath...its sparkling eye, its open hand, it's cheery voice...and its joyful air."(644)
  • Marley's chain is symbolic for all that was important to him before he died, such as material wealth and profit.
  • Indirect Characterization
  • "...and found that everything could yield him pleasure. He had never dreamed that any walk-that anything-could give him so much happiness."(667)
  • The theme of transformation is evident because Scrooge is displaying emotions of happiness and sadness for the first time throughout the novel. The audience finally sees a different side of Scrooge that was not prevalent before.
  • "To hear Scrooge expending all the earnestness of his nature on such subjects, in a most extraordinary voice between laughing and crying; and to see his heightened and excited face would have been a surprise to his business friends in the City, indeed" (635)
  • The ghost of Christmas Present is symbolic for the Christmas ideal- cheerfulness, generosity, and kindness. Therefore, the ghost of Christmas Present is significant because he directly contrasts with Scrooge.
  • The use of indirect characterization reveals that Scrooge has become a more kind, cheerful, and empathetic character.
