Storyboard Text

  • Well.............
  • Miss Bafter how did the English language  begin?
  • Here is the time of old english where english was only just developing from languages like French and German
  • May the lord carry you to the after-life Mary
  • Now in middle english some new words came about like doctor and plauge and disease
  • Poor people that plauge was really bad
  • Over time the English Language has been changed by many different cultures into the language we know and speak today.
  • Romeo, Romeo. Where for art thou Romeo?
  • Here I am oh Juliet
  • Deny thy father and refuse thy name
  • The time period of Old English lasted from 500AD-1100AD and it was derived from languages such as Saxon, Scottish, French, Latin and even German. An example of a text from this language is the poem Beowulf, which is about a knight who ends up fighting and killing a dragon, but then dies from his wounds.
  • Kids! I cooked some shrimp on the barbie! Come and get some tucker!
  • Sure thing mate
  • Middle English was in the time period between 1100AD-1558AD. The language is abit more developed and people are more like they are today. The period of Middle English was at the same time as the plague, therefore new words were invented such as 'doctor' and 'disease'.
  • Well did you learn anything?
  • Yeah! I learnt about old English, middle English, Shakespeare and slang!
  • Shakespeare's time was from about 1558 to 1800. In that time Shakespeare invented about 1700 words and he wrote about 37 plays.  It was also a barbaric time as certain forms of entertainment included beating people to death and lighting them on fire.
  • That is the REAL SHAKESPEARE!?!?
  • Slang is probably the most recent language there is. Slang is a very diverse language and it is changing everyday. Words like tucker (food), G'day and dude are all slang words within Australia. Every culture have their different slang languages and this is what makes it so hard and confusing to understand the different slang across the different areas .
  • See yas' I'm gonna take off
  • It is hard to imagine that a language can change so much in such a small amount of time. It is interesting to see how easily influenced it can be from other languages and new generations. English language is still changing as time goes on.
  • Hooroo!
