Once before the time of Kupe when Aotearoa was newly fished there lived two taniwha brothers, Ngake and Whataitai.
The oldest brother Ngake was immensely fit and fast while Whataitai was relaxed and always sleeping or lolling on his back in the water.
What about it dear brother?
One day Ngake built up the courage and bashed through a wall of rock and swam into the open ocean. Leaving Whataitai to follow
Well I'm Going to break through to the sea Goodbye BROTHER
I just never want to leave! This place is great!
YES!!!!! free at last! Ngake yelled in savage triumph as he swam into the open sea to greet all the animals from the cheeky Maui dolphins to the enormous, slow moving tohora nui
Gingerly Whataitai tried to follow but his stomach got caught on the rough rocks, shingle and dirt that Ngake had rammed out of the way in his attempt at freedom
All of a sudden a fierce shaking threw the earth around and a plinth of rock rose out of the water and with it Whataitai. As Whataitai took his dying breath one word escaped from his chapped lips "Ngake"
