James Gatz was born to a poor family on a rural farm in N. Dakota. Eventually, he went to college at St. Olaf’s in Minnesota, he dropped out after two weeks, loathing the humiliating janitorial work by means of which he paid his tuition.
The following summer, he worked at Lake Superior fishing and clamming, hardly scraping by. One day, while at the lake, he noticed a storm brewing in the atmosphere. He also noticed a yacht on the water that seemed unaware of the impending storm.
Gatz decided to row out to the yacht and warn it about the storm, and the yacht owner was extremely grateful. The man, named Dan Cody, decided to take Gatz under his wing as a personal assistant and exposed him of true luxury.
When Cody asked for Gatz's name, something inside him switched. He went from the poor James Gatz to the luxurious Jay Gatsby. He and Cody traveled around the sea for 5 years together, and Cody became mentor to young Gatsby.
When Cody suddenly died, Gatsby had practically lost a father. However, the taste of luxury had graced Gatsby's tongue, and he craved it. He began to make money by any means possible, to commemorate Cody and impress the girl of his dreams, Daisy.
Gatsby decided to go into the military, but before this, he spent time with Daisy and decided that he loved her, Daisy, however, had a love for only one thing: money, so Gatsby made it his life.
