  • A Spaniard sent a letter to President McKinley calling him a bidder for admiration
  • The newspapers make up a lot of fake news to get more money and they lied about things happening between the Spanish and America. This led to the war.This is called yellow journalism.
  • America sent a list of rules to Spain that were give Cuba their independence,
  • Follow our commands
  • The USS Maine war parked in the Havana Harbor in Cuba to protect American citizens and properties. It exploded on Feb. 15th, 1898 and sunk killing 250 American sailors. The Americans blamed Spain for this.
  • President McKinley was still hesitant before the war even after Spain did not follow all of the commands
  • and that he was weak. A newspaper intersepted this letter and released it to the public, and when they saw this they went crazy and started pushing for war against spain.
  • The Us won the war and signed a treaty with Spain, which gave Cuba their independence

  • because he really wanted peace but that could not happpen unless Spain gave Cuba their independence so that led to war. It first broke out when commander Dewey attacked the Spanish ships in the Philipines.
  • and we bought the Philipines , Costa Rica, and the island of Guam for twenty million dollars. So Cuba finally had their independence form Spain in the end
