  • In 1808 congress passed a law ending the Atlantic slave trade. Northerners had no more interest in slavery, but still wanted cheap cotton slave labor in the south.

  • In 1831, William Lloyd Garrison, a very religious person, started the abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator. Garrison believed in all of the slaves be free and did not retreat but it lead to angry pro-slavery groups to burn down his house and destroyed his printing press.
  • Sojourner Truth
  • Slavery should come to an end!
  • Fredrick Douglass spoke out at an abolitionist meeting. He described the torture children faced in slavery and brought people to tears. Douglass quickly became a leader in the movement. He got many people inspired to get involved and make a difference.
  • Today
  •  The reform started to change by women started to get involved and a  young woman named Angelina Grimke spoke against slavery and many anti-abolition threw stones at her and even started burning down the building where she was speaking at. Her and her twin sister spoke out about the pain and poverty of slavery. 
  • A former slave named Sojourner Truth has a strong believer spiritually and spoke out on corners of streets in the North. When she met Douglass and Garrison it inspired her to speak out about slavery and believed slavery would end peacefully.
  • All these people paved way for many more people to speak out about slavery like Martin Luther king who like Sojourner Truth wanted to end Discrimination in peace. Today there is no more slavery and Black and whites live in  peace.These were first people to speak against slavery and help people today live together.
