  • Chapter 1
  • Chapter 2
  • Chapter 3
  • The symbol of the green light represents the hopes and dreams of Jay Gatsby. the symbol is important because Gatsby portrays the green light as if it was Daisy standing on the dock.
  • Chapter 4
  • The Eyes of Dr. E.J. Eckleburg symbolizes the moral value that Americans lost due to increase in business. It also symbolizes that no matter what you do in life, good or bad, someone is always watching you because Tom doesn't realize that many know about his affair.
  • Chapter 7
  • The mansion represents the emptiness Gatsby has in his life that the lavish parties "fill". It also represents the love he has for Daisy as well as his success of becoming "new money" to rival "old money" because he wanted to show Daisy that he can give her everything he wants now.
  • Chapter 8
  • The very first time that Gatsby and Daisy meet again is a symbol that no matter what happens in life, how successful you are, and what you do in the present, life has this way of bringing up the past, even when you don't expect it or if it's on purpose because Daisy and Gatsby have a past that will stir up their present.
  • In chapter 7, the symbol of the yellow car represents the destructive power and death that can happen when money comes into play regardless the social status and the luxuries one has because there is always a dark side to success that only a few know about.
  • Myrtle's death in the Great Gatsby is a symbol of how women are destroyed & put down in society, attacking the femininity of women when Fitzgerald describes how she looked after the accident. Her death symbolizes that she died in pursuit of the object of her desire towards Tom because before she passed she was going to leave Mr. Wilson.
