Does democracy mean all citizens agree? Can two opposing viewpoints ever be merged into an agreeable compromise?
In response to the enactment of Jim Crow legislation, there were several perspectives that emerged in response to being relegated to second class citizenship. Booker T. Washington favored appeasement and gradual assimilation by proving African Americans are worthy of citizenship by not arguing or protesting and by possessing a strong work ethic-demonstrated by technical work.
WEB DuBois favored a different approach that emphasized African American humanity and intelligence-as that they are capable of higher level thought and should have the ability to choose their profession, attend college, etc.
