Jonas was selected as the Receiver of Memory. The most important role in the community.
Okay Jonas this is the first memory I'm giving to you.
The rules for Jonas is they allow him to be rude, lie, not allowed to speak of his training. He is told to go to the annex everyday. He's prohibited from dream telling. Not allowed to apply for medicine. He's also not allowed to apply for release.
Why isn't the rest of the community allowed to make decisions?
The Giver's home has locks which other house's do not have. He has a ton of books on the walls and other people only have three. His house is also furnished very nicely compared to the rest of the community.
The first memory the Giver transmits to Jonas is sledding down a hill. The next one is a sunburn which is the first memory of pain.
The community is not allowed to make decisions because its "dangerous" for them. It is unsafe for the community.
"Seeing beyond" is the ability to see colors. Which everyone else in the community can only see grey, black & white.
