  • On the right is the narrator, and on the left is his friend C. Auguste Dupin. They have had meditation, silence, and meerchaum for one hour. 
  • Their friend, Monsieur G---, the Prefect of the Parisian Police comes for some advice on a case of his.
  • The minister stole a letter from a woman who lived in the royal apartment, but the woman couldn't get it back because the letter had information that the third guy in the room couldn't know about.
  • They tried pretending to be a thief, and mugging it from him, but they couldn't find it.
  • They tried his home, but they couldn't find it.
  • G was in such desperate need that he gave 50,000 francs to Dupin to help him with his case.
