  • Warriors of Europe wanted to free the Holy Land along with Jerusalem from the Muslims (Seljug Turks) who took control of Asia.
  • We must take control of Asia!!
  • Seljug Turks 
  • Western Europe and France formed the first crusading army. They made their way to Jerusalem in 1099  (Jerusalem surrendered) after capturing Antioch and traveling along the Palestinian coast.
  • The First Crusade
  • The Muslims tried striking back at the first crusading army in 1144 starting the second. It failed in 1187 after Jerusalem fell to the Muslim forces.
  • The Second Crusade
  • Three European rulers led a third crusade because of the Muslim's earlier success. They arrived in Egypt in 1189, one of the leaders drowned and the two that survived ran into many issues so they signed a peace treaty in 1192.
  • The Third Crusade
  • We shall fight!!!!!
  • Pope Innocent III started the third crusade and they sailed east to fight over the Byzantine empire in 1193, they sacked Constantinople in 1204, and the Byzantines recaptured their city  in 1261 only to be overthrown again in 1453 by the Turks.
  • The Fourth Crusade
  • (Germany, 1212)  Nicholas of Cologne thought that God had told him to lead a "Children's Crusade" so he was joined by many young people traveling to The Holy Land by sea. Around the same time that his group had gathered, another group of about 20,000 French children headed to The Holy Land, also, and the children were sold as slaves in North Africa.
