  • Cuba rebelled against Spain rule in 1868 and 1895. Cuba wanted the U.S to help them fight but the U.S was unwilling. Meanwhile yellow journalism was exaggerating news reports.

  • The U.S signed the Treaty of Paris on Decmeber 1898. In the treaty, the Spanish government reconizes Cuban independence.
  • In return for 20 million, Spain also gave up the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific island of Guam. These became U.S territories.
