Cuba rebelled against Spain rule in 1868 and 1895. Cuba wanted the U.S to help them fight but the U.S was unwilling. Meanwhile yellow journalism was exaggerating news reports.

Spain accepts all but Cuban Independence.
The U.S signed the Treaty of Paris on Decmeber 1898. In the treaty, the Spanish government reconizes Cuban independence.
In return for 20 million, Spain also gave up the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific island of Guam. These became U.S territories.
