Because the English failed to colonize Roanoke Island, they had little interest in colonizing America.
When the English arrived to America, they continued to promote colonies of wealth, rivaling other countries, and expanding the British Empire.
The English settled along the Chesapeake Bay in 1607. This area was unhealthy, and had many mosquitos which lead to infection. Many of the men had no experience working with their (most of them were wealthy investors).
Jamestown was attacked by the Powhatan Natives multiple times, but eventually established a trade.
Colonist failed to plant crops, and prepare for long-term habitation because they expected instant wealth. The poor leadership and harsh winters led to starving time.
A crop called tobacco became the cash crop of Jamestown. It sold well, and brought new investors/settlers to the colony. Later on in 1619, Virginia began to set up their politics. They began the House of Burgesses.
