  • President Washington Foreign Policy
  • No More Alliances
  • President Adams Dilemma Protecting US Ships
  • Start a half war and capture the french so they stop shooting down our ships.
  • Adams Pursues Peace
  • Lets make peace.
  • Only of you don't make me pay for the ships we shot down.
  • During the revolutionary war the US signed a treaty with the french to promise that they would help them in time of war. Later on when the French started their own revolution we did not come to there aid. Instead George Washington started something called isolationism which meant that the US would not start any alliances and get involved in other nations conflicts
  • President Jefferson Dealing With Pirates
  • The Americans signed a treaty with GB so they would leave the Ohio Valley. The French, however, say this as a violation of the treaty between them and the Americans. A couple years later they decided to start attacking American ships. To get rid of this problem, Adams started a ¨Half War¨ with the French so they would stop destroying the ships. This meant that the Americans attacked the French Ships.
  • Jefferson Solves the Problem
  • No more trade with other nations.
  • Adams decided what he was doing was not the right thing for the country so he decided to make peace with the French. By that time Napolean Bonaparte had become the ruler of France and he had already seized fire on American ships and was willing to make peace with the US. He made a deal with them to end the treaty with they had mad earlier for a small price. The price was that Adam would not make him pay for the ships he shot down.
  • Protecting Sailors and Settlers
  • No more trading with other countries
  • I won't attack. (just kidding)
  • If you don't pay me I will continue to attack your ships. To show I am serious I declare war.
  • In the Mediterranean Sea the Americans had another problem from the Barbary States of North Africa: piracy and robbery at sea. These pirates attacked ships and held the crews for ransom. Both President Washington and Adams were paying the rulers of the Barbary States for the safety of American ships. By the time Jefferson came into office, the US had already paid the States over $2 million. Their ruler still demanded more money.
  • I don't want to pay you so let me think about war.
  • Jefferson agreed to start the war because he hated paying them more than war. The war lasted two years. Eventually,in 1815, the US and European Naval forces destroyed the bases of the pirates. At that time Jefferson was tying to convince the European's to stop attacking the ships but they would not budge. Jefferson decided to start an embargo. No foreign ships could go to US ports and American ships could not leave unless they were going to another US port. This hurt the US and some 55,000 sailors lost their jobs.
  • We all just lost our jobs. The other nations aren't affected this is only hurting us.
  • The British gave us guns.
  • President Madison had a new approach. "What if you didn't attack our ships if we didn't trade with your enemies?" is what he asked the Britain and the French. Napoleon agreed to Jefferson's offer yet continued to seize their ships. They later found out when they were moving west was that the Indians had the British guns. They were already a problem and now they had guns. This infuriated many Americans and made them really want war with Great Britain. Madison was angry but wasn't sure if they were strong enough.
  • They have guns!!!
  • I declare war on GB. But would it be best for the country?
