  • In Medieval Europe, a disease called the Black Plague was introduced to many towns and villages.
  • Rats were the main carrier of the disease, which was an aggressive version of the organism, Yersinia pestis.
  • The organism could infect humans via rat fleas, which was the bubonic plague and also the first of three diseases related to the Black Plague.
  • The second type of plague was the septicemic plague. Symptoms included serious chills and bleeding, bleeding and parts of skin turning black.
  • The third and final plague was the pneumonic plague which was extremely contagious. Symptoms include fever, delirium and buboes.
  • The Black Plague was a serious and rare disease that impacted Europe in the years 1346 - 1353. Casualties were 60% of Europe's population at the time which was 50 million.
