  • John White
  • Take 90 men, 17 women, and 9 children to the Americas and colonize on the unconquered territories for England. I am leaving you in charge .
  • I will lead you to the Americas to build a colony for our King and Queen!
  • John White then chose 90 men, 17 women, and 9 children to establish the second colony of England--the colony of Roanoke. 
  • In August of 1578, on the coast of North Carolina, the colonists reached Roanoke. 
  • After the English colonists had settled in their new American colony.
  •  John White had to go back to England for supplies. He was planning to come right back to Roanoke but a war between England and Spain delayed him. 
  • Will see you shortly
  • When John White finally came back to the English colony--EVERBODY WAS GONE! The area had a high fence built around it, but all the houses, ships, and people were gone. There were no signs of life. The only message left was the carved word "Croatian" No search parties were sent so the mystery of Roanoke remains...
