Son, always remember that bragging is not a hero's characteristic.
Your father is right, Beowulf!
Capable of deeds of great strength and courage
Most epic heroes will have an above average station in life. They will be kings, princes, or nobles of some sorts. Beowulf was a prince and he later became a king.
Travels Over a Vast Setting
The hero has the potential for great deeds. The levels of their deeds are beyond what the commoner does. Beowulf fought monsters and killed them, that's not for a commoner. He fought Grendel as giant till he shrank to death.
Oh, the great Beowulf!!
Before the hero does his business in the epic, he usually establishes himself in combat during a war. Beowulf had fought in wars, he even dragons, and other sea monsters before fighting Grendel.
One cannot be considered a hero if they stay in their village their whole life, the more countries or area traveled to, the better. Grendel is a perfect example; he went from his country, Denmark, to fight for the Danes.
Before a hero can be celebrated by countries around the world, he must first be recognized in his home country as a great and heroic person. Beowulf was known in his home country as a very strong and powerful man before he went to the Danish.
