In the first chapter we see that equality is walking through a dark tunnel with candlelight to light the way. The tunnel's walls are cracked and water runs along them. "Nothing moves in this tunnel save our hand on paper"(Rand 17).
Later on into chapter 1 we get to learn about Equality. Equality is actually a very smart individual with many questions but that is frowned upon in the community. "This is a great sin, to be born with a head which is too quick"(Rand 21).
In chapter two, Equality meets a girl named liberty 5-3000. Equality calls her the golden one because she has beautiful blonde hair. "The Golden One were kneeling alone at the moat which runs through the field"(Rand 42).

Continuing into chapter two, we see that Equality is found looking off into the uncharted forest thinking about secrets from the unmentionable times. He stares into these woods with curiosity. "And as we look upon the Uncharted Forest far in the night, we think of secrets of the Unmentionable Times"(Rand 48).
In chapter three, Equality discovers electricity by touching a frog hooked to a copper wire with his knife. He then puts copper wire into a jar with zinc and discovers electricity. "We put a piece of copper and a piece of zinc into a Jar of brine, we touched a wire to them, and there, under our fingers, was a miracle which had never occurred before, a new miracle and a new power"(Rand 52 53).
In chapter four we see that Equality and Liberty meet up again to talk. They discuss nicknames they have given to each other. Liberty tells Equality that his nickname is Unconquered and Equality tells Liberty that he calls her the Golden One."What name have you given us? They looked straight into our eyes and they held their head high and they answered: The Unconquered"(Rand 55,56).
