"I stood alone outside the school for a while with a black eye, from Rowdy's good bye".
This fits in with the self esteem theme, as Arnold had the guts to be the only native kid going to a white school, with a black eye on his very first day. Arnold all ready believes that he will be pummeled and demoralized from other students. Arnold's self esteem didn't hold him back, from what we really wanted, a fresh start.
To build a high self esteem and confidence requires pummeling life's obstacles. When Arnold asks his parents "Who has hope", he has faith that just for once indians do. When his parents respond "White people", Arnold feels immediate demoralization. Even though he feels this way Arnold realizes this belief, won't let him stop from accomplishing his goals.
"White People "
"Who has hope"?
One of the best things Arnold has is his girlfriend. When she asks "Arnold are you poor?" Arnold of courses wants to say no I have lots of money, but he knows he needs to let her know whats going on. Arnold had the self esteem to tell one of the best things that has happened to him, he is poor, Arnold doesn't want her to leave him for that one reason. His self esteem was left behind and he came out with the truth, which she willingly accepted it.
"Yes, yes I am"
"Arnold, are you poor"?
