  • The Attack
  • Early in October, the birds came flying down in excitement, Jones and his men were coming to attack the farm and regain control over the animals.
  • Confusion

  • . . .
  • "Snowball launched his first attack. All the pigeons, to the number of thirty-five, flew to and fro over the men's heads and muted upon them. While at the same time the geese went about pecking at the men's legs. This attack was meant to cause confusion."
  • Snowball's Counter
  • Snowball then sent out all the sheep, Muriel the goat, Benjamin the donkey, and he himself led them into battle.
  • Retreat!
  • "But once again the men, with their sticks and their hobnailed boots, were too strong for them; and with a squeal from Snowball they fled back into the yard." With a cheer the men followed, this was just what Snowball wanted:for them to come into the stronghold of the animals.
  • Ambush
  • The animals charged, Jones raised his gun and shot Snowball in the back, but did not succeed in killing him. Boxer reared up and kicked a stable-boy in the head, knocking him to the ground unconscious. After seeing this the men started to retreat, running out the gate as fast as they could.
  • Retreat! (for the men)
  • "And so within the five minutes of their invasion they were in ignominious retreat by the same way as they had come, with a flock of geese hissing after them and pecking at their calves all the way."
