Montressor vows to avenge himself and his family after the disrespect Fortunato had shown. In this process he plans to lure Fortuanto and accomplish the termination of Fortunato.
Montressor visited Fortunato at about dusk and when Montressor first arrived Fortunato accosted him with excessive warmth. Then, Montressor mentioned he was going to see Luchesi to taste some amontialldo, but Fortunato would much rather he go than Luchesi.
As Montressor refuses to take Fortuanto, Fortunato starts throwing statements that Luchesi does not know a thing about amontillado, but Montressor continues to tell Fortunato that he is far too afflicted to be going anywhere.
Montressor was already planning on taking Fortunato but Montressor wanted ware him out while he was drunk, so Fortunato took Montressors arm and Montressor suffered Fortunato to hurry him to his palazoo.
There was nobody at home as Montressor had told them not to return til the morning. Montressor also gave them explicit orders not to stir from the house, the orders were sufficient. He had ordered this in the event that Fortunato would come.
Montressor took two flambeaux and gave one to Fortunato, took him through several suites of rooms to an archway which led to the vault. As they went down the winding staircase Montressor requested Fortunato stay cautious, as they reached the bottom they stood together on the damp grounds of the catacombs.
