The boys hunt a boar but prove more difficult than Jack expected and escapes leaving a wound on Jack's arm. They rein-act the hunt of the pig but get a bit to carried away and end up scaring robert who was the victim (pig).
Jack and the hunters kill a pig and put its head on a stick. Simon sits next to the stick and uses it as a way of communicating to his inner voices in his head. (Represents the devil.)
Simon finds out that the beast on the rock is actually a dead soldier tangled in his parachute. Simon runs to tell the others. The hunters and the others are having a feast and chanting. Simon stumbles into camp at the wrong moment and in the frenzy of the chant the boys kill Simon.
They reflect on Simon's death and Piggy says that it was an accident but Ralph thinks that it was murder. Roger climbs castle rock and finds a "nifty" rock with a log wedged under it; this acts as a lever which Roger is fascinated by. (foreshadowing)
Piggy is killed, and the faction led by Jack has taken on a savage, ritualistic mentality. Ralph goes to confront them.
Jack and the hunters turn on Ralph and begin to hunt him. Ralph runs to the beach to escape Jack. There, he encounters a British Naval Officer. As he attempts to tell him what has happened, he breaks down into tears. When the other boys arrive, they also begin to sob.
