Storyboard Text

  • Now, you should explain the Law of Conservation of mass to these youths Elprup, don't'cha think?
  • You're right! I'll show them on my tablet.
  • While you do that, I'll work on the ship!
  • The Law of Conservation of Mass states that when chemical and physical reactions take place, mass is not created or destroyed. This law is the basis for balancing chemical equations.
  • To balance an equation there are two ways, first, I'll show you the trial and error method.
  • To begin, I'll show you an equation CH4+O2 --> CO2+H2O Next, write the chemical symbols underneath the equation in the same order on both sides. CH4+O2 --> CO2+H2O C= C= H= H= O= O=
  • Next, write the subscript of each element next to their symbol (on their respective sides). CH4+O2 --> CO2+H2O C=1 C= 1 H= 4 H= 2 O= 2 O= 2 + 1
  • (By the way, oxygen's total is separated because oxygen is in two different compounds)
