  • Winston Smith wakes up to the Physical Jerks alarm and Big Brother watching him through the telescreen.
  • Winston uses a corner of his room to write in a red diary that he bought. Here, the telescreen can't see what he is doing, giving him some sense of privacy.
  • The Parsons children are playing Spies, and as Winston leaves their home, the young boy throws an object that strikes the back of Winston's head.
  • Winston talks with Syme about the newest edition of the Newspeak dictionary. Winston thinks that Syme will be killed by the Party because he is too intelligent.
  • After Winston and Katherine, his wife, realized that they couldn't have children, they decided to separate.
  • Winston writes in his diary that he believes if the proles realize their oppression and rise up, they can overthrow the Party and start a revolution.
