We are actors, hired by Milgram to conduct the experiment
Today we will be conducting an experiment. Where there are two roles, a teacher and a learner. The person on the left is the learner and the person on the right is the teacher
It is only a study on the effect of punishment on memory. How bad can it be? I consented to be here and was paid $4.50 just for showing up. I have to see this study through.
The participant was shocked and unable to process the whole situation. Every time the participant tried to withdraw from the experiment, the experimenter kept urging the participant to carry on using four prods. After all four prods were used and the participant reached the maximum voltage, the experiment ended.
I can't stand the pain!
I'm fine... Not getting any shocks
Prod 1: Please continue. Prod 2: The experiment requires you to continue. Prod 3: It is absolutely essential that you continue. Prod 4: You have no other choice but to continue.
Milgram did debrief the participants fully after the experiment and also followed up after a period of time to ensure that they came to no harm. Milgram debriefed all his participants straight after the experiment and disclosed the true nature of the experiment. Participants were assured that their behavior was common and Milgram also followed the sample up a year later and found that there were no signs of any long-term psychological harm.
