Storyboard Text

  • On october 19, 1957 the Soviet Union launched a aircraft called "Sputnick 1" which was put in Earths orbit. This started the Space race.
  • On January 31, 1958 the USA launched their first satellite which was after the Soviets had launched Sputnick 1 and 2. The Explorer 1 stayed in the Earths orbit until 1970.
  • On July 29, 1958 NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) was formed by the USA to take control of all space research and missions.
  • "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
  • On April 12,1961 the first man was launched into space successfully by the Soviets which gave them a huge lead in the Space Race. The first man in space was a man named Yuri Gagarin on the Vosotok 1 Aircraft.
  • On March 18, 1965 Alexey Leonov was the first man in actual space to get out of the space ship. He was outside of the spaceship for exactly 12 minutes and 9 seconds, but he barely made it back to Earth.
  • On July 16,1969 the USA took the first people to the moon and landed which Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the moon. This gave the USA the lead and as most say the win of the space race.
