In December 1989, the secret police murdered thousands of men and women, and children who were peaceful. Finally, the army refused to support any more repression. Ceausescu and his wife were captured on December 22 and they were executed on Christmas( Dec. 25). After that, a new government was quickly formed.

In 1965, the communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife, Elena, set up a rigid and dictatorial regime in Romania. Ceausescu ruled Romania with an iron grip, using secret police to crush all dissent. Also, his economic policies led to a drop in living standards, including food shortages. However, his plan for rapid urbanization, especially a program that called for bulldozing of entire villages, which upseted the Romanian people.
There was a large drop in living enviorment because of economic policies being made. The food was becoming a problem for the people, because of Ceausescu econmic policies. The people mostly ate bread, flour, and sugar! Also, there was a lot of food shortages time to time.
