  • Also, this poem is peculiar for its strong presence of alliterative verse.
  • By the blade of its father, forged in steel, hardened by fire...
  • Side note: an alliteration a phonetic repetition which gives a melodious tone.
  • Another characteristic is the hero this epic poem, Beowulf. He is the son of the king Scyld, from Geatland. He's know to have a superhuman strength, he's the strongest and the greatest of all men. As the convention says, this character is meant to be the embodiment of the values of his civilisation. In other words he represent was matters to a people. 
  • In summary, Beowulf learns about the wrongdoing of a monster, Grendel, in Herot. He leaves for Herot where he offers to the king Hrothgar his help to slay Grendel 
  • The poem has it that Beowulf ripped Grendel's arm off in the banquet all after an epic fight . Grendel then die once he returned to his cave. 
  • (Grendel is scarier in the movie)
  • He also killed Grendel's mother, who tried to avenge the death of her son.
  • (Grendel's mother also is scarier in the movie)
  • After his battle, he was rewarded and returned to his kingdom, where he became king and is meant to have ruled for 50 years….
