  • American nationalism and pride was represented well by the founding of Amherst College in Massachusetts and Notre Dame in Indiana in the 1800's.
  • Connecticut and Massachusetts adopted the Mann resolutions for dividing students into separate grades and requiring specific content taught to all students.
  • We only have one teacher and we are so crowded in our classroom.
  • Universities in the northern states provided huge libraries, especially for medical and legal studies.
  • As in much of the world during this time, there was no public transportation. Most children attended schools within a few miles of their homes.
  • One-room school houses were common in the south during the 1800's. Children of all grade levels were taught together. School schedules revolved around planting and harvest times.
  • There was often no time or money to provide children with music or art classics. The basics - reading, writing and math- were usually all that were taught in southern schools.
